Gel nail polish has been all the rage recently and it’s easy to see why. With more and more DIY gel nail kits, it’s easier than ever to achieve salon quality results from the comfort of your home. Not only do gel nails last longer, but they can even strengthen your nails when done properly! It isn’t hard to get great results at the home, but there is a bit of a learning curve for beginners who are used to using traditional nail polish and not gel polish. Here are 5 dos and don’ts ever gel nail addict needs to know!
Do use the right supplies. When it comes to creating great nail looks, you need to have the right supplies on your side. Unlike traditional nail polish, you need a few more materials to really rock the gel nail polish look. You should purchase gel polish from the leading retailer of at-home gel nail kits to ensure you’re getting quality polish, and you’ll also need a sealing top coat. Gel top coat is different than regular polish top coat, and it really locks in the color for that long-lasting quality gel polish is known for! In some cases, you’ll also need a special light that solidifies the gel paint, but read the instructions for your gel polish to make sure you have the right tools before you get started.
Do clean your nails before you start painting. One of the biggest differences between gel polish and regular polish is the prep work. You can’t just begin painting your nails without preparing them first! Because gel polish really seals to the top layer of your nails, you need to make sure your nails are as clean as possible to ensure a perfect manicure. Use an alcohol swab or a q-tip to gently clean any dust or debris from the top of your nail. If there’s any remaining dust or debris, it can easily get caught under polish and create bumps or prevent the polish from sealing with your nail.
Don’t apply too many layers when painting with gel polish. When you paint with traditional polish, you might be tempted to slather on several layers to achieve a vibrant color. That isn’t necessary with gel polish, and since it’s such a thick paint to begin with you want to limit your layers. One or two layers is all you should need to create a great shade of whatever color you chose! Painting more than two layers can lead to the paint looking bulky or uneven since it dries into a very thick substance. Less really is more when it comes to gel polish!
Don’t pick at your painted nails! If you’re prone to picking at your nail polish, be careful! Gel polish really adheres to the top layer of your nail. That means if you pick at the polish after the gel has dried, you’re actually picking at the top layer of your nail! If you notice any chips or breaks in your gel polish, simply go over the area with a thin layer of fresh polish or top coat. That should seal the paint again to prevent further breakage. To avoid premature breakage, paint over the edge of your nail to form a seal with your polish over the top of the nail.
Do rock your gel manicure with confidence! The best part of gel manicures is they last a long time! Say goodbye to worrying about chipping your manicure within days of painting your nails, and stop worrying about painting your nails a new color every week. Because gel manicures are so strong, they’re perfect for special events and even perfecting a team's look. Gel polish can even make your nails healthier since the strong material is resistant to breaking. If you’re prone to frail, breakable nails, a coat of gel polish will give your nails the support they need to grow healthy again!
Gel nail polish is here to stay. Gel nail polish is a trend we can all get behind! With more DIY gel products on the market every day, it’s easier than ever to master the art of gel polish. There are so many great colors and styles to choose from, it’s no wonder this trend is here to stay!
